Summer school : Maritime Spatial Planning and Management

Training action

As part of the COSELMAR research project (www.coselmar.fr) led by the IUML (www.iuml-cnrs.fr) and in association with the Marine Spatial Planning Research Network (www.msprn.net), a Summer school dedicated to Maritime Spatial Planning and Management issues will be held in Nantes (France) in June 2015.

This Summer school targets PhD and Post-Doc students who are interested in these issues which are increasingly emerging in different countries and regions, including Europe. For 5 days, specialists from different parts of Europe will be gathered to lead intensive courses and practical exercises, alternating between broad conceptual approaches and in-depth case studies. The draft program is structured around six thematic sessions and one practical exercise:

  • Integrated Maritime Policy
  • Stakeholder involvement and engagement
  • Transboundary issues
  • Data, knowledge and tools
  • Spatial planning and zoning
  • Time, space and scales
  • Linking maritime and coastal planning

The goal is to pitch this English-speaking Summer school dedicated to Maritime Spatial Planning and Management at a high, international and selective level. The program will also include discussions, each involving 2 or 3 participants, regarding practices and approaches in their countries and areas of interest. To this end, each pair of participants will exchange position papers before the Summer school and a discussion will be organized between them. The application and participation process has 4 steps:

  • 13 February 2015: Dead-line for application (form and CV)
  • 27 February 2015: Publication of the list of selected participants
  • 30 April 2015: Reception of position papers to be discussed (cf. Cross-discussions)
  • 7 May to 1 June 2015: Preparation of discussions

The number of participants is limited at 20 persons selected to benefit of the payment of travel and accommodation costs (booked by the University of Nantes), plus other 10 places without financial support.

The applications should be addressed to the Selection Committee, which is composed of scientists involved in the organization and delivery of the Summer school:

  • Fatima Lopes Alves (University Aveiro - Centre of Environmental and Marine Studies, Portugal)
  • Gillian Glegg (University of Plymouth, United-Kingdom)
  • Holger Janssen (Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Germany)
  • Stephen Jay (Unversity of Liverpool, United-Kingdom)
  • Andreas Kannen (Institute for Coastal Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany)
  • Thomas Klenke (University of Oldenburg, Germany)
  • Helena Maria Gregorio Pina Calado (University of Azores, Portugal)
  • Andrea Morf (University of Gothenburg, Sweden)
